Art-Science Residency
Shifting perspectives through art and neuroscience
Meet Our New Residency Counselors
Mauricio van der Maesen de Sombreff — Technical Advisor
Effective technical advising ensures that artistic vision and technological possibilities are aligned from the earliest stages of a project. As a counselor for the NeuroNarratives residency, Mauricio van der Maesen de Sombreff will guide residents in exploring the technologies relevant to their work and in navigating the technical challenges that arise throughout the process.

Internal NeuroNarratives Mid-term Symposia
We hosted the internal mid-term symposium online, bringing together our residents and project team for an inspiring exchange of the project development. During the session, residents presented the progress of their projects, shared early insights, and discussed the challenges and opportunities emerging from their interdisciplinary collaborations.
The symposium offered a valuable moment for reflection and feedback, strengthening the shared development of the residency.
More updates about the residents’ projects will be announced soon!

Meet Our New Residency Counselors
Prof. Dr. Emilie Caspar — Effective Message Communication
Art-science collaboration can deeply engage the public, but it also brings communication challenges. Emilie will guide residents on effectively communicating messages that are clear, compelling, and respectful of both scientific content and artistic practice to the public.
More counselors will be announced. Visit our Counselor page to learn more!

Meet Our Residency Counselors
As part of the NeuroNarratives program, we’re thrilled to support our artists and scientists with dedicated residency counselors with extensive experience in art-research collaborations. These experts will help residents by offering insights from their experience and support with challenges that arise.
Prof. Dr. Suzanne Dikker — Finding Common Ground
Science often emphasizes precision and replicability, while artistic practice may embrace ambiguity and exploration. Suzanne will help residents bridge these differences by developing a shared working language and finding a common ground for both rigorous scientific research and art practice.

NeuroNarratives at the KVAB Academic Cultural Forum 2025
On 4 June 2025, the NeuroNarratives project was presented at the Spring Series 2025 in Brussels, an annual event organized by the Royal Flemish Academy of Belgium for Science and the Arts (KVAB) together with the Academic Cultural Forum.
The Spring Series explores the complexity of visual perception through both scientific and artistic perspectives. This year’s edition brought together researchers, artists, technologists, educators, and policymakers for an engaging interdisciplinary dialogue on how visual culture is formed, interpreted, and influenced.
During our contribution, we introduced the aims and framework of the NeuroNarratives project, emphasizing its interdisciplinary methodology. The presentation led to insightful discussions and meaningful exchanges with participants across fields.
We thank the KVAB, the Academic Cultural Forum, and all attendees for an inspiring event.

NeuroNarratives: Speed Dating
Today, we launched the first meeting of NeuroNarratives — an initiative where artists and neuroscientists come together to share ideas, build connections, and explore the creative possibilities at the intersection of art and science.
This kickoff gathering was all about sparking dialogue and forming collaborative pairs. We’re excited to see what emerges from these partnerships over the coming year. 🧠 ✨
A huge thank you to all the residents for bringing such energy, curiosity, and openness to the start of this journey.
